While I liked Privateering (Knopfler's previous solo album), "Tracker" is a much stronger album with songs and guitar work that are more memorable and melodic. The lyrics are quintessential Knopfler, who is capable of telling a compelling story about just about anything. In "River Towns," for example, he wanders into Springsteen territory (the song even features a nice sax solo) with its tale of a man seeking comfort with a bottle and a prostitute when he finds himself alone over the holidays, "When I asked her if she'd like to stay, she was down my stairs so quick..so I get the bottle open, but something's hit a nerve, and I'm looking in the mirror at the face that I deserve."
There's a range of styles represented in the songs on this album, but they're all good--darned good. I found myself drawn particularly to "Long Cool Girl," a sweet gentle song that will have you humming long after the album's over. "Terminal of Tribute To" is the most rock-centric of the batch and most likely to please the Dire Straits fans. The duet with Ruth Moody channels his work with Emmylou Harris.
If faced with the impossible task of rank-ordering Knopfler's discography in terms of quality, I'd put "Sailing to Philadelphia," "Shangri-La," and "Tracker" in the top 3 slots, but danged if I could decide in what order. "Tracker" is an outstanding album. Buy it.
* NOTE: However, I've got one pet peeve with this "Deluxe" release - the standard version of this album apparently has ten (10) tracks, while this so-called "Deluxe" edition has fifteen (15), yet there are other (even better) versions of the album out there, including one which contains a total of eighteen (18) tracks with the following three additional songs on it:
#16. Time Will End All Sorrow
#17. Oklahoma Ponies
#18. Hot Dog
So my point is, in principal, this so-called "Deluxe" edition, really isn't that "Deluxe".
If you're strictly a Dire Straits fan, this is probably not the best Knopfler solo album to start with (try "Get Lucky" or "Golden Heart", albums I also love) but for those of us who have been with Mark since "Sultans of Swing" first landed on the charts and have followed his career closely, his trajectory is quite clear and while it's different it's still great. There are no songs on this album I think would fit on a Dire Straits release, but "Beryl" comes closest, although the introduction to "Mighty Man" vaguely reminded me of "Down to the Waterline" while the beginning of "Lights of Taormina" sounds a bit like "Water of Love". It may not be coincidental, but those are my favorites on "Tracker". The one song that struck me as out of place was the almost funky "Broken Bones". Don't get me wrong, I like the song, it just seems a bit divergent from the remaining harmonious whole. In truth there are no bad songs here, and I do appreciate the exquisite subtlety of all the pieces; having said that I still don't think "Tracker" is one of Mark's standout solo albums, but multiple plays have endeared it to me more and more, so maybe my position will ultimately evolve on that too.
Like every other Dire Straits or Mark Knopfler recording, I highly recommend "Tracker"; hearing it is like catching up with an old friend who has some new stories to tell.
