I’m fine with Apple supplying the Feds with software and expertise to brute-force just this one phone, provided the software doesn’t end up permanently in the Feds’ hands. Anything beyond that is too much.

(ETA: I’m not sure where this opinion fits in the poll, so I went with “Not sure.”)

Is the stuff on this phone needed for national security, to uncover some plot endangering thousands of people? If not, then let the FBI try their own hands at cracking the password.

I went with “no pending the highest court decision.” I think it sets a bad precedent and we’ve already given away far too much of our privacy. AFAIK there has been no indication from law enforcement that this couple were somehow leaders of a larger terrorist cell or whatever, and since they’re both dead they’re no longer a danger to anyone. The feds have specialists in this stuff—use them, don’t ask Apple to undermine its own products.

I voted “Apple should say no.”

The FBI is trying to set a precedent here. It’s not just about the San Bernardino attack. It’s about forcing tech companies to build in back doors for them.

Voting “Apple should say no” -

That being said, I think a more workable solution would be to have the FBI provide the phone to Apple and with the task of unlocking the phone, in some fashion that doesn’t break the evidence possession chain- I’m sure that Apple has plenty of secured labs that would satisfy this requirement, then the phone is returned once unlocked. That way, Apple doesn’t compromise its security, and the FBI gets its evidence.

Really proud of Cook and his public stance but am voting “not sure” because, well, I’m not sure.

Unlike a majority of folks in our country I believe that the people who work in our Federal Government are good people who share our same concerns and values.
