VERONA, N.Y. — Tactical law enforcement officers from across the region will gather at the Turning Stone Resort and Casino next week to view the latest law enforcement equipment and receive training, but the expo’s keynote speaker has drawn criticism from groups advocating against Islamophobia and bigotry.

The keynote speaker at the New York Tactical Officers Association annual expo next week is Ryan Mauro, a senior policy analyst at the Clarion Project, a Washington, D.C.-based think tank aimed at “exposing the dangers of Islamist extremism”.

The Council of American-Islamic Relations issued a news release Thursday asking that the New York Police Department and other agencies “investigate” whether their officers are attending Mauro’s address, calling him a “notorious anti-Muslim conspiracy theorist” and an “Islamophobe”. The council is a Muslim civil liberties and advocacy organization.

The Southern Poverty Law Center has labeled him an “extremist” and “anti-Muslim” for his comments following the Charlie Hebdo attacks in Paris and his work at the Clarion Project. The law center specializes in civil rights and public interest law.

Mauro also has warned viewers on Fox News of so-called “no-go” zones in Europe that he claims were established by radical Islamists imposing Sharia Law. He has said such enclaves exist in New York State. […]
