After the country gets through the Biden/Harris inauguration (hopefully without some ungodly catastrophe), and after Trump has his phony sendoff parade where he probably gives himself a medal and a pardon that won’t stick (unless one from Pence does), he’s the guy that is going to wake up in Florida to nothing but lawsuits and bill collectors, and maybe even another divorce to sweeten the pot.

Sure, he can rant on Fox News and OANN, but that doesn’t make any of that stuff go away. People are coming for him, legally, and no amount of denial and screaming is going to keep the wolves at bay.

It’s not like death by a thousand cuts. Death by a thousand cuts results in death.

He brought all this shit on himself, laid it all on America’s doorstep, made an enormous mess that will take years to recover from, but he’s still alive. So there are rumours that the insurrectionists are planning violent take-overs of State capitol buildings.

At the risk of asking a stupid question, anyone have any idea what exactly do they think that will achieve?

I mean, although it didn’t make that much sense, the storming of Congress at least had a vague idea of “stop the election from being certified” as a goal. Other than being a release of violence, what is the alleged goal of storming state capitols?

I think this is pretty close. If you look at anything that gets barfed up in Qanon or sovereign citizen kookery, it likely has some bizarre fixation on the power of objects and incantations to force the normies and the Deep State to do what they want. So, if you take over a specific old and drafty building with crappy cell reception, the government will have No Choice but to accede to your demands.

The dude that sat in the Speaker’s chair in the Capitol and declared that Trump won the election probably wasn’t joking.

52
Dr Lizardo  Jan 16, 2021 • 2:48:15am

So, the Qcumbers are quadrupling down on their cray-cray:

Joe Biden is really John F. Kennedy Jnr in a CGI mask and Donald Trump is a billion-year-old intergalactic being made of pure starlight who plans to introduce a cure for all disease in his second term.

And on January 20, Trump will magically appear on TV screens around the world via “particle beam” to take over and announce a new world order.

That’s according to far-right group QAnon, among some of its wildest conspiracy theories yet which have been escalating since the Capitol riot sealed the end of Donald Trump’s presidency.

In keeping with QAnon theories about Trump waging war against the elites who are really paedophiles, the Q cult actually believes they are cannibals.

Called “pedovores”, they preferentially eat children, and their leader is actor Tom Hanks.

(Arlington is the Virginia County directly across the Potomac River from the District of Columbia. It was originally part of the District.)

Four Bridges Connecting Va. to D.C. Will Be Closed Starting Tuesday

Virginia State Police is working with the United States Secret Service to close Roosevelt Bridge, the I-395 Bridge and the 14th Street Bridge starting Tuesday morning through Thursday at 6 a.m., according to a joint statement from Virginia lawmakers.

The Arlington Memorial Bridge closed tonight, according to news reports, and will remain closed until Thursday. The HOV span of the 14th Street Bridge is set to close Saturday morning until Thursday, according to the Secret Service.

Nope. Conservative privilege. Mental illness does not equal violating the law.

In the video of the woman attacking the man with a grocery cart because he is wearing a mask, with about ten people recording it, this is conservative performance art.

In every one of these mob videos where they claim “I was attacked first,” you never see the part of the video showing that attack.

When they cry “call the police, he assaulted me,” they never call the police. The combination of wanting to rule over someone (the very definition of conservatism), plus the police would round up their cell phones to see what really happened (he didn’t attack her, and possibly charges for them).

There’s a reason I call them feral conservatives.

One bill would strike marijuana from state laws criminalizing drugs and remove past convictions for marijuana possession from the record books. Another would legalize cannabis for medical purposes.

Marijuana legalization bills introduced in Nebraska Legislature (Omaha World-Herald)

State Sen. Terrell McKinney [D-snubbed by Pete Rickets welcoming new senators because he’s black] of Omaha offered a proposal that would wipe the slate clean on marijuana. Legislative Bill 481 would strike marijuana from state laws criminalizing drugs and remove past convictions for marijuana possession from the record books.

The measure would also spell out that parents cannot lose their children just for use or possession of marijuana. But it would add marijuana smoking to the types of smoking banned in public places and work sites.

Also on Friday, Sen. Anna Wishart [D] of Lincoln introduced a new version of her Medicinal Cannabis Act. LB 474 would set up a process to regulate the production, processing and distribution of marijuana for use by people with certain health conditions.

There is a bill to put a sales tax on everything in Nebraska (including all services). Republicans in the Unicameral have been selling this as a “consumption tax” as opposed to a “sales tax” (they’re the same thing, and when I called out my state senator in my county paper where he wrote about it, they wouldn’t print my letter).

Colorado’s tax is 15%.

Where Does All The Marijuana Money Go? Colorado’s Pot Taxes, Explained (Colorado Public Radio, October 22, 2018)

TL;DR: It is not a panacea for fixing budget problems which should be properly solved with progressive taxes on businesses and the wealthy.

Ever since Colorado legalized recreational cannabis there’s one perennial question that everyone always asks. Where is all the tax revenue from marijuana sales going?

Depending on where you live, the questions may get a bit more specific: If schools get pot money why do they continue to hurt for cash? Are school buildings getting fixed? Why is my town or county seeking tax hikes, aren’t government budgets pot plush? What do we get for our tax money? Where is it ending up?

In short, there’s a lot of questions.

Despite the fervor, marijuana isn’t the big green budget bandage that many envisioned. That’s not to say that the state isn’t making money on the deal, but, like many taxes, it’s not a cure-all that balances the checkbook.

The Republican governor announced his intention on Friday to attend the transfer of power.

He previously attended President Donald Trump’s inauguration four years ago.

“We want the next administration to be successful, and we should focus on a smooth transition,” the governor said earlier this week.

Ricketts also said he’s spoken with the Biden transition team about developing a partnership between governors and the federal government on the rollout of the coronavirus vaccine.

Dude, you’re recovering from a coronavirus infection, as is your wife. Keep him away from Joe and Kamala.

Comment at the Scottsbluff, Nebr. Star-Herald on my wingnut state senator trying again to get his “consumption tax” passed in the state legislature. (Since the paper has a problem with printing letters from liberals, it’s easier to comment directly on articles since I have a subscription.)

Senator Steve Erdman says his “consumption tax” would be a hard sell. A consumption tax is a sales tax, which is why proponents of such taxes will never use the term; indeed Sen. Erdman says it is not a sales tax. Consumption taxes are notoriously unpopular in this country.

During the colonial period, both the Stamp Act and the Tea Act were consumption taxes. During President Washington’s administration, the Whiskey Tax was a consumption tax.

The purpose of flat taxes such as sales or excise taxes are to push down the tax burden from the fabulously wealthy and corporations onto the poor and middle-class. Warren Buffett and I pay precisely the same sales tax on a gallon of milk or excise tax on a set of tires or a gallon of gasoline. Those taxes are a significantly larger portion of my meager income than Mr. Buffett’s.

These proposals are usually accompanied by calls for a reduction or elimination of progressive income taxes, further entrenching the tax burden on those least able to pay it. Call it what it is, Sen. Erdman, a flat sales tax on everything.

From what I understand, Hitler was put in power in order to calm followers and prevent further civil unrest that was occurring. I figure the idea was the same, that the attacks will stop if you just leave Trump as president. Which is the exact opposite of what will happen, but that’s what they want to claim.

Dozens of positive coronavirus cases have been traced back to Christmas services at a Massachusetts church, according to authorities.

The Woburn Board of Health has been working with the state to notify people who attended one of four services Dec. 23 and 24 at Genesis Community Church in Woburn.

Woburn Church COVID Cluster: What to Know (WBZ-TV, NBC Boston)

Churches are limited to 25% capacity at the moment. That’s about 25% too high, but Christian privilege exists everywhere in the nation.

The church was founded in 2011 as part of the “Acts 29” church-planting network founded by Mark Driscoll. He was booted from the organisation over his scandals with Mars Hill Church (the church was booted as well). The former CEO in the group, one Steve Timmis was removed for “abusive leadership” last year. Currently, Matt Chandler, pastor of Village Church (Southern Baptist) in Flower Mound, Texas leads the group.

It’s purpose is to steal members of other churches spread the Gospel.

Acts 29 is an apocryphal book (Acts has only twenty-eight chapters).

Apparently, Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar has resigned… effective January 20th. That literally means nothing, you dumb shit. Good job on pretending to have scruples.

I could be wrong, but I don’t believe the cabinet members automatically lose their position when the next administration takes office. They serve at the pleasure of the President, and some have continued in office bridging administrations.

I assume Biden was asking for Azar’s immediate resignation, being such a royal cockup. Nonetheless, I think Azar is attempting to register protest here, while maintaining at least a shred of continuity. Not that it helps much, him being such a royal cockup. If he was actually helping Biden in the transition process, this move might actually be good.

But this feels like pure CYA to me.

Here’s why Republicans will oppose it:

Scholars at Columbia University’s Center on Poverty and Social Policy did a quick analysis of President-elect Joe Biden’s $1.9 trillion economic relief plan, and are enthusiastic, saying the proposal “has the potential to cut child poverty in half.”

“We find that a relief package containing enhanced Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits, unemployment benefits, family tax credits, and direct cash payments could cut child poverty in half in 2021,” the researchers write. That would mean an estimated 5 million children would rise above the poverty line. The analysts point to these elements of Biden’s package as alleviating poverty for families with children

I don’t think Pfizer and Moderna are failing to deliver doses. And I’m not aware of a difference between what the admin is saying they have received and what they have been saying they delivered. I do know that there has been issue with Pfizer originally saying they couldn’t deliver doses they had manufactured because the admin wasn’t prepared to take them.

In today’s episode of “tax every church”:

Houston Megachurch Pastor Sentenced to Prison for Fraud Scheme; Church Calls Him a “Victim” (goes to Julie Roy’s, a blogger dedicated to cleaning up the corruption across Christianity):

Federal authorities have sentenced Houston megachurch Pastor Kirbyjon Caldwell to six years in prison for his role in a multi-million-dollar investment fraud.

In an official response, leaders at Caldwell’s 18,000-member church—Windsor Village United Methodist—called Caldwell a “victim” and said the sentence was “disappointing.”

According to the U.S. Department of Justice, Caldwell and business partner Gregory Alan Smith defrauded investors, many of whom were elderly, out of $3.5 million.

At his sentencing Wednesday, Caldwell said, “They trusted me with their money, and I abused that trust. I misled them. I profited at their expense, and for that, I am very sorry.”

(you’re sorry you got caught, more at the link)

Well, looky here. A mainline Protestant church.

When asked whether he believed the American Revolution was biblically justified, McFarland said, “I don’t know that the American Revolution was completely justified from a biblical sense.” But McFarland also said, “I’m not going to say that the American Revolution was not justified.”

He added, “I would say this, that big tech, and the U.S. government of 2021, is morally, spiritually, economically, much more oppressive than Britain in the colonies of 1776. I mean that seriously. At least the Brits weren’t forcing the children of the colonists to become atheists.”

DC is heavily militarized right now. And it was already one of the most heavily policed areas in the world. Significant parts of the downtown are fenced off and other parts are prohibited spaces. (Including the National Mall.) After January 6th, the local constabulary is in no mood to be jovial or forgiving. Particularly with a young male who just happened to show up from out of town just as a lot of militia (other young males) promised to show up.

Many site were closed due to the pandemic. Lots of other places have closed through Thursday. Numerous main roads are currently or will be closed.

Add to that the possibility of stochastic violence by random people.

My own view is that while it might, theory, be exciting to see what is happening, hanging around a warzone for fun is not a good idea. Most stuff is shut down; There are a lot police around; There is the real possibility of armed trouble makers appearing. If the very best happens he will basically be stuck in an apartment for a week, see nothing, and he and his car will be untouched.

I live in Fairfax County and have no intention of venturing particularly far from my neighborhood until Thursday. While I am a good 20-30 miles from Capitol Hill, the stupidity can be anywhere.

Perhaps it might be worthwhile making a counteroffer that would encourage son and lady friend to be somewhere else rather than in the middle of a warzone where lethal force is permissively listed on the Rules of Engagement.

Danny Masterson’s arraignment on multiple rape charges postponed again (USA Today)

This is completely shameful and these arbitration agreements should not be allowed. I’d note that this DOES NOT do away with the criminal case against Danny Masterson. So he gets his space-alien arbitration…he may be doing it while he’s defending himself against rape charges. So this is not a complete Get Out Of Jail Free thing.

That said, this is a problem even outside space-alien cults. A lot of Evangelical churches, particularly of the Calvinist flavor, are requiring people to sign “covenants” before they’re accepted into membership. BEWARE. These are legal documents and could force you into arbitration with a group that is not impartial. Moreover, these churches reserve the right to impose discipline which could have serious and deleterious effects on people’s lives. Prior to the Fourth Century, Christianity was a minority religion in the Roman Empire. When it became the state religion of the Roman Empire, Christian apologists started using lies in their apologetics arguments to promote their faith.

Everything from Christians being eaten by lions to debauched orgies to slaughter of unbelievers to witch trials to warfare to slavery, all of it was promoted with lies.

christians really were eaten by lions. the empire was fine with you worshipping whatever or whoever you wished, as long as once a year, you could go into the temple and mouth the words that the emperor was in fact god. (this is one of the things that Britannia, otherwise a Donovan-fueled drug orgy of wrong history, actually gets right). Christians could not do this. They were not willing to play that game. And they did get rounded up and fed to lions in the collosseum. they also occasionally got used as human torches for the occasional Nero dinner engagement/book signing.

According to Israeli historian and professor Yuval Noah Harari:

In the 300 years from the crucifixion of Christ to the conversion of Emperor Constantine, polytheistic Roman emperors initiated no more than four general persecutions of Christians. Local administrators and governors incited some anti-Christian violence of their own. Still, if we combine all the victims of all these persecutions, it turns out that in these three centuries, the polytheistic Romans killed no more than a few thousand Christians.

While certainly not a model of human rights, the Romans were nowhere near as monstrous as portrayed by later Christian apologists.

In today’s episode of “tax every church”:

Houston Megachurch Pastor Sentenced to Prison for Fraud Scheme; Church Calls Him a “Victim” (goes to Julie Roy’s, a blogger dedicated to cleaning up the corruption across Christianity):

(you’re sorry you got caught, more at the link)

Well, looky here. A mainline Protestant church.

Just a comment…be careful about what you read at Julie Roys’ blog. She’s anti-LGBTQIA and deadnamed Daniel Lavery last year when Lavery exposed how his father, John Ortberg, had been protecting his son and Daniel’s brother Johnny from the consequences of Johnny’s preference for young teenage boys. And then there’s the business of the missing laptop…But the point is that at first Roys insisted on calling Daniel Lavery by his old name, and then the next time there was a story about Lavery (which she bought from Religious News Service), she went through and changed all the “he/him/his” pronouns to “Daniel”. Because in Julie Roys’ mind, transgender people don’t exist. (Yeah, she blocked me on Twitter because I got entirely up into her face about how she was being an asshat. *shrug*)

That said, she’s also given a signal boost to research done by others which is helping to discredit the late apologist Ravi Zacharias. (Pence spoke at Zacharias’ funeral.) It turns out that Zacharias was a serial sexual abuser and his ministry is having to come to grips with the fact that his reputation is *destroyed*. (Example: he was part owner of a spa and sexually harassed the women massage therapists. One therapist said he masturbated ~50 times in front of her during sessions.)

More than 255 former and current Wheaton College faculty and staff have signed a statement condemning last week’s attack on the Capitol and specifically decrying “blasphemous abuses of Christian symbols.” The statement also denounces what it calls “wicked leadership—especially by President Trump,” but also by some evangelical leaders.

That’s the problem here, blasphemy, not insurrection. Way to go, Christians.

You know, I understand what you’re saying, but sometimes you have to use the language of the people you’re trying to reach. Yeah, telling churchgoers that if they prayed to overturn the election means they supported a coup is one thing, but saying that Donald Trump is an antichrist is quite a different thing. You are telling them that they went against Jesus. Same here with the blasphemy.

And in a world of separation of church and state, do we really want churches to weigh in on insurrection? Shouldn’t that be a secular government function? I don’t want churches deciding what is and isn’t an insurrection.

The notion that “lying for Jesus” as a sport started in the 4th century is weird on many levels. First of all, it doesn’t take a state religion to lie about itself. Second, there is no evidence of such a qualitative leap. Third, this is obvously not so since you already see numerous intentional falsehoods in the gospels.

(E.g., forcing a woman to stay with an abusive husband because the Bible only allows a marriage to end by death or adultery.)

My friend Dee Parsons has talked about this a lot at her blog: thewartburgwatch.com

“Lying for Jesus” is also known as “pious fraud.”

One of the examples I gave was Christians being thrown to the lions by the Roman Empire. (There is no evidence of this. It is to advance the idea Christians were persecuted.)

More recent examples of the same persecution are the ideas expressed “they’ll force us all to be atheists” or “Christianity is the most persecuted religion in America” (never mind no one is doing the first and there practically a church on every streetcorner in the nation, a clear sign of persecution).

Pious fraud requires intent, rather than ignorance or delusion. Thus, churches of every denomination which cover up child sexual abuse while accusing atheists of that crime are engaging in pious fraud. A parishioner who hears that and believes it is not; they are ignorant. Pious fraud seeks to engage the ignorant to spread their message.

Pious fraud is supported by the New Testament:

7 Someone might argue, “If my falsehood enhances God’s truthfulness and so increases his glory, why am I still condemned as a sinner?” 8 Why not say—as some slanderously claim that we say—“Let us do evil that good may result”? Their condemnation is just!—Romans 3:7-8, NIV

Pious fraud is not limited to Christianity; it is also supported by the Qur’an.

Mythbusting Ancient Rome - throwing Christians to the lions (University of Queensland)

TL;DR: no.

The lede:

‘CHRISTIANS TO THE LIONS!’ rang without end through all quarters of the city.

So writes Henryk Sienkiewicz in his novel Quo Vadis (1895). By the end of the 19th century, the image of cowering Christians huddled in the arena awaiting their deaths as lions prowled towards them was the defining symbol of Roman religious persecution and the subject of many famous paintings.

The 1951 Hollywood version of Quo Vadis, starring Peter Ustinov and Deborah Kerr, enshrined this grisly scenario in popular culture. Today, the prevailing modern conception of the relationship between the Roman state and the Christians is that a number of emperors, including Nero and Marcus Aurelius, were responsible for introducing policies of persecution.

This is a modern take on the pagan Roman Empire, which Christianity had every reason to vilify (they were pagans).

And they did get rounded up and fed to lions in the collosseum. they also occasionally got used as human torches for the occasional Nero dinner engagement/book signing.

We know there were occasional persecutions of Christians prior to the 4th century, and they were because people refused to sacrifice to the emperor’s “genius”. Probably the earliest work by a Christian woman is enclosed in the Acts of Perpetua and Felicitas. If you read between the lines, it’s fairly clear that quite a few Christians were making the sacrifice and it was a relatively few people, like Perpetua, who were obnoxiously clear about not making the sacrifice, who were being executed.

Similarly, the bakufu (Tokugawa shogunate) had a yearly ceremony where members of a household had to be certified that the had stepped on a “fumi-e”, either a metal or paper representation of a picture of Jesus or Mary. It was reasoned that a true Christian would not do that. And yes some people were hauled away. But there were secret Christians throughout the bakufu, who emerged in the 1870s when Catholic priests returned to Nagasaki.

The only time I really really really wanted to break a rule and take a picture was at the national museum in Fukuoka. They had on display a metal fumi-e of Jesus, that had been worn down over the years from people stepping on it. I still think about that fumi-e sometimes.
