More than 700 indictments so far for 1/6 seditionists (who knows how many are cooperating witnesses and rolling on the organizers); and if you’ve looked at the list of committee subpoenas, there’s a lot more information coming.

We’ve had several instances of judges asking the Feds why they’re low-balling sentencing requests.

And what I’m noticing in the committee subpoenas is the classic divide, between those who can afford to drag this out (the rich) and those who are agreeing to cooperate because they can’t afford prolonged court battles (the poor). We’re just 2 months away from the first anniversary of that dark day and so far only one of the ringleaders has even been indicted for refusal to comply, and all signs point to him dragging it out until either the courts throw his ass in the slammer or until the Repubs take back the House and put the kibosh on all Congressional investigations.

That said, at least he has listened to me and not invested anything in Bitcoin / coins /etc.. In fact, he likes to point out how incredibly *wasteful* Bitcoin is. Last I checked (which was last month), Bitcoin mining chews up the equivalent of Finland’s electrical consumption in a year. Actually it’s more. Finland uses 86.1 terawatts of electrical power and Bitcoin uses around 91 terawatts.

Crypto and pyramid schemes have a lot in common.

Admittedly I’m mostly getting this from Youtube guys like Coffeezilla…but the impression I get is that Crypto is basically a Scooby Doo costume, and what’s underneath is some kind of scam.

Pump and dump, pyramid schemes, affiliations scams, creating irrational exhuberance or just straight fixing prices…all of this can be done with crypto spaces while the mystique of crypto—it’s argot, it’s very online culture with all the implications of Festinger-like reprocessing of invalidating information—provides an explanatory structure for why the scam can’t be a scam.

What’s…darkly interesting…and probably a bad sign is that crypto is decentralized in that participants are trained to punish themselves for skepticism rather than their just being a more explicit punitive system or external social pressure. It’s Byung-Chul Han’s Burnout Society but for scams.

Hell, $62 billion is a fart in a punch bowl. Just look at these numbers:

From its peak in the second quarter of 2007 at $64.4 trillion, household wealth in the United States fell $14 trillion, to $50.4 trillion by the end of the first quarter of 2009, resulting in a decline in consumption, then a decline in business investment.[43][44][45] In the fourth quarter of 2008, the quarter-over-quarter decline in real GDP in the U.S. was 8.4%.[46] The U.S. unemployment rate peaked at 10.0% in October 2009, the highest rate since 1983 and roughly twice the pre-crisis rate. The average hours per work week declined to 33, the lowest level since the government began collecting the data in 1964.

Yup, that’s 14 Trillion bongo buckaroos that turned into vapor because of bullshit banking “Instruments”.

True, and in rural agricultural towns, RO may be the only thing that cleans enough Nitrate (from fertilizers) out of a public water supply to reach EPA requirements.

But you know this. It is the hell of Public Water System operators across rural America.

My hometown has several (most? all?) of its wells doing RO before going into the purification system because of industrial contaminants from a WWII ammunition factory.

If you see old military .30-06 with EC on the base it was made at National Presto in Eau Claire WI during WWII and helped screw up our water supplies.

We test for nitrates at the top of the wells and the testing points around town, but they aren’t the problem here. It’s the uranium and arsenic.

A lot of agricultural towns do have problems with nitrate fertilisers though.

Oof, the combo of uranium and arsenic can be real a bitch kitty. Is there also a radon problem in town? That’s not unusual in a uranium => radium => radon decay cascade.

The arsenic is often a bigger problem. That’s locked up in the sandstone and is leached out by simply pumping groundwater. You can get rid of your arsenic problem by not pumping groundwater to your water tower.

Oh, wait, that’s not viable, is it?

Hmmm…

I don’t understand myself well enough to confidently give you an answer. This doesn’t even seem to be some kind of unique crypto misdirection, either…it’s just misrepresenting your holdings.

As best I can tell, crypto still exists in a space where it’s not heavily enforced. In the case of Tether, it seems like regulators are asking questions but the people running it have legal wiggle room to not give an answer that immediately sets off alarms and starts arrests or a market crash.

Since the video I posted went up there’s been some follow-up discussion but nothing’s resolved. The company claims to have commercial paper that equals the missing value, but actual investors are extremely skeptical because they can’t find trades that demonstrate this.

How this is, I don’t know.

Everybody in NY believes Madoff’s wife was intimately involved with every single detail of his scam, from day one. She’s been in the financial biz since before they even met, they were partners in the firm, they had desks right next to each other, she signed off on all the quarterly reports. When he confessed and said it was all just him and she knew nothing… nobody believes that. Nobody. When she goes to shul, everybody sits as far from her as possible. If we had any equivalent to excommunication, she’d have gotten it. We have to settle for she’s just shunned.

The Scottish government has reported six cases of the Omicron variant of COVID-19 have been detected here. There doesn’t seem to be any connection between the people infected and the states in southern Africa where the variant seems to have developed and spread initially, no history of travel in that area or familial or social links.

We did have a well-attended rugby international between Scotland and South Africa a few weeks ago and there were some travelling supporters from Serf Efrica but the government has ruled out the match as a source from the Omicron cases they have detected overnight.

The six individuals are self-isolating at home and don’t require hospitalisation, at least at the moment. No news on how many of them are vaccinated.

Not necessarily. A lot of international flights from Scotland going long-distance use continental hubs, not Thiefrow or other English airports. On my trips abroad over the past couple of decades I’ve flown from Edinburgh airport to Schiphol in the Netherlands, Charles de Gaulle in France and even Finnish and Italian airports to catch an onward flight to places like Narita or Montreal. Only once did I fly from Heathrow and that was only because I happened to be in the London area at the time.

Heathrow isn’t like Hartsfield, it just seems like that to outsiders.

Prince Charles was in Barbados.

At midnight tonight, under floodlights and a balmy Caribbean sky, the Prince of Wales will be guest of honour as one of the world’s smaller democracies formally severs its connections with the Crown and proclaims itself the republic of Barbados.

As of tomorrow morning, soldiers, police officers, judges, civil servants and all the other apparatus of state in what many regard as the ‘most British’ of the Caribbean nations (some still call it ‘Little England’) will no longer owe allegiance to the Queen.

They will, instead, be answerable to Dame Sandra Mason, a highly-respected 72-year-old judge who becomes the country’s first president.

China was holding the door for Prince Charles departure:

They will, instead, be answerable to Dame Sandra Mason, a highly-respected 72-year-old judge who becomes the country’s first president.

Announcing the deal, its Chinese ambassador, Tian Qi, issued the usual platitudes about ‘greener development’, before telling Jamaicans: ‘To get rich, build roads first.’ By contrast, Britain’s promise to spend £2.8 million on marine research in 17 small island states across the Caribbean and Pacific does not cut much mustard.

In other words, places such as Barbados are moving on. This week’s constitutional switch is certainly a big moment for Mia Mottley, one of the most impressive politicians in the region.

and when questioned, the Prime Minister stated:

When one UK journalist did manage to broach the subject with the prime minister in Barbados a week ago, the response was a thinly-veiled charge of racism.

It was ‘a reflection of unconscious bias’, Miss Mottley told the Sunday Times, to question the country’s links with China: ‘It suggests we can only exist as pawns of someone and if it is not the British empire it must be the Chinese empire.’

markets are designed to operate under at least the nominal notion that the price of object reflects its inherent costs, plus the cost of transport/storage/handling and a premium for providing the utility of it being there at the right time and place.

the only utility premium in a transaction like this is exactly as you described: concealing the transfer of funds.

Matthew McConaughey isn’t running for Texas governor:

Despite strong poll numbers suggesting he’d be the leader in a race for Texas governor, actor Matthew McConaughey said in a video posted to his social media pages on Sunday evening that public office is “a path I’m choosing not to take at this moment.”

“I’m going to continue to work and invest the bounty I have in supporting entrepreneurs, businesses and foundations that I believe are leaders,” the Oscar-winning actor said in the three-minute video.

McConaughey said in the video that he “never imagined” he would be in a position where people would seriously consider electing him to public office, and said that he explored the possibility of entering the political sphere. But he will instead continue his work through his nonprofit org Just Keep Livin’, which provides fitness and support programs for teens in inner-city high schools.

McConaughey’s departure clears the way for a 2022 showdown between Abbott and O’Rourke, with the former seeking a third term as governor. Abbott has polarized Texans with his handling of the COVID-19 pandemic and refusal to enforce social distancing and vaccination requirements at businesses. Even among some Republicans that support such policies, he has been criticized for the decline of Texas’ utility infrastructure. Since the start of the pandemic, Abbott’s approval rating has fallen from around 55% in April to 43% now, according to FiveThirtyEight.

Throughout 2021, websites associated with far-right extremist groups and extremist-friendly platforms and hosts have suffered from data leaks and breaches that have exposed the inner workings of far-right groups, and the nature of the movement as a whole.

The data has been exfiltrated in breaches engineered by so-called “ethical hackers” - often assisted by poor security practices from website administrators - and by activists who have penetrated websites in search of data and information.

Experts and activists say that attacks on their online infrastructure is likely to continue to disrupt and hamper far-right groups and individuals and makes unmasking their activities far more likely - often resulting in law enforcement attention or loss of employment.

Numerous far-right groups have suffered catastrophic data breaches this year, in perhaps a reflection of a lack of technical expertise among such activists. Jim Salter, a systems administrator and tech journalist, said: “Extremists, and extremist-friendly entities, have a noticeable shortage of even-tempered, thoughtful people doing even-tempered, thoughtful work at securing sites and managing personnel.”

Joël Stoppels Battlefield Tours is in Antwerp, Belgium.

One of the darkest days in Antwerp was November 27, 1944. Shortly after noon a German V-2 “ballistic missile” fell right at the intersection of the Leien with the De Keyserlei and Teniersplaats. At that moment a crowded tram and a British column passed. The result was devastating: 128 civilians and 29 soldiers were killed

Antwerp: City of Sudden Death

The critical supply port of Antwerp was the most heavily targeted city during the V-weapon campaign of 1944-45. For 167 days, ending on March 30 1945, V-weapons rained down on the city. 3700 civilians and 700 allied military personnel were killed, and more than 10,000 injured.

I have a desktop with an older graphics card driving an OLED TV at 3840x2160 through a 25’ HDMI cable that does fairly well @60Hz but the display was starting to go black for a second or two at random times before blinking back on. I started to run it at a lower resolution and dropped the refresh rate to 30Hz but that didn’t help. Finally tried a different port on the TV, Yay! It never did deliver HDR when streaming so I’m upgrading to an Intel NUC with much better graphics specs in a much smaller package, plus it has on onboard CEC header that allows on/off control via the TV’s remote. I have an active 25’ HDMI cable ordered that should reliably deliver a 4K signal with HDR.

Maybe rare, but hardly “nonexistent” - ISTR that there is some story about a “healthy young” HS or college athlete dropping dead in the gym/on the field to the level of (sadly) 3 or 4 every year. re: #156 jeffreyw

If you ever need to, pretty much every Nvidia card supports 4K, even their cheap $30 cards.

Maybe rare, but hardly “nonexistent” - ISTR that there is some story about a “healthy young” HS or college athlete dropping dead in the gym/on the field to the level of (sadly) 3 or 4 every year. Tragic, of course, but AFACBD, unrelated to outside issues. Though, naturally, the anti-vaxx nuts will seize on anything to push their BS…

A poem comes to mind, “On An Athlete Dying Young”.

re: #169 Eric The Fruit Bat

So @jack is stepping down as CEO at Twitter.

Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey will step down from his role effective immediately.

Dorsey co-founded Twitter with Evan Williams, Biz Stone and Noah Glass back in 2006 and served as CEO until 2008. He later returned to the CEO role in 2015 after former CEO Dick Costolo stepped down. He has a net worth of approximately $11.8 billion, according to real-time tracking by Forbes.

“There’s a lot of talk about the importance of a company being ‘founder led’,” Dorsey said in an email to employees shared on Twitter Monday. “Ultimately, I believe that’s severely limiting and a single point of failure. I’ve worked hard to ensure this company can break away from its founding and founders.”

Dorsey will be replaced by Twitter chief technology officer Parag Agrawal, who has been unanimously appointed by the social media giant’s board.

“He’s been my choice for some time given how deeply he understands the company and its needs,” Dorsey explained. “Parag has been behind every critical decision that has turned this company around.”

He also expressed his confidence in incoming independent board chairman Bret Taylor.

“He understands entrepreneurship, taking risks, companies at massive scale, technology, product and he’s an engineer,” Dorsey said. “All of the things the board and the company deserve right now.”

In addition, he praised the ambition and potential of the Twitter team.

I wonder if this means they’ll finally do something about the Nazi problem.

According to the Douglas County Jail booking records, Rep. Coleman was arrested by the Kansas Highway Patrol on I-70 westbound at mile marker 203 and booked into the jail at 1 a.m. Saturday.

KTKA reports that he was released on a $250 bond Saturday afternoon.

Coleman’s last arrest was on on Octpber 30. Police responded to an Overland Park home where Coleman lived with his brother. According to a court document, Coleman’s brother told officers they argued over his upcoming baptism. He then accused Coleman of pushing him backward, hitting him in the chest, and spitting on him.

Let’s see if this has any effect on the Twitter platform (narrator: it probably won’t, seeing as Dorsey’s replacement is handpicked, but we can hope):

Jack Dorsey announced today that he’s stepping down as CEO of Twitter, the social network he helped found in 2006. The change is effective immediately.
[…]
Parag Agrawal, the company’s chief technical officer, has been named the new CEO. “The board ran a rigorous process considering all options and unanimously appointed Parag,” Dorsey wrote. “He’s been my choice for some time given how deeply he understands the company and its needs.”
[…]
In his resignation letter, Dorsey also said that he will be stepping down from Twitter’s board of directors when his term ends in mid-2022. The current chair, Patrick Pichette, will also be stepping down, though he will remain on the board. Bret Taylor, Salesforce’s president and chief operating officer, will join the board as the new chair.

I once adopted a dog that was scary ugly.

Young sharp-pei. Malnourished and scrawny tiny body with huge oversized head. Had so many wrinkles that her eyelids turned outside in (her eyelashes rubbed against her eyes). She couldn’t see because it was painful to open her eyes.

My older daughter yelled “what is that?” And then rushed out of the room first time she saw the dog.

Got the dog off the corn based food she had been eating and she immediately started to gain weight.

My daughter got the dog officially listed as a rescue and then found a pet ophthalmologist who did eye surgery very cheaply (she worked with rescue orgs).

That dog loved to run once she could see and had a large yard with room.

Casey (the dog) soon became muscular, active and a wonderful pet. Her bark would raise the hair on your neck and even folks with pitbulls would cross the street when they saw her; she looked very scary.

But she was the sweetest loving dog and a great protector.

I miss her.

One more comment about Casey the Shar pei. The only dog to ever challenge her was a bull mastiff which pulled away from the owner and grabbed Casey by the back of her neck.
