Mind-Blowing Modern Jazz Fusion: GEM, “Crazy Tweaks”

Music • Views: 22,093

YouTube

Just discovered this wild video that’s almost two years old, featuring Dirty Loops bassist Henrik Linder and two amazing dudes I hadn’t heard before. The bass lines in this are unbelievable.

GEM is a project featuring Meinl Cymbals artist Matt Garstka, pianist Eldar Djangirov, and bassist Henrik Linder. Matt’s Meinl Cymbals setup from left to right, if sitting behind the kit, is as follows:

14” Byzance Jazz Thin Hihats
18” Byzance Jazz Extra Thin Crash
8” Byzance Traditional Splash
18” Byzance Traditional Extra Thin Hammered Crash
22” Byzance Vintage Pure Ride
Artist Concept Model Fat Stack
20” Byzance Equilibrium China

Piano, synths, composition, and mixing by Eldar Djangirov
Drums - Matt Garstka
Bass - Henrik Linder

Yeah, I just had someone tell me the same thing on Twitter.

Sometimes it takes a little while for Twitter to take action on Chuck. But maybe Chuck’s right, maybe they’ll eventually give in and let him run amok again. Could go either way with these clowns.

Something very bad is going on at the New York Times, and to a lesser extent the Washington Post. I’ve been very close to canceling my WaPo subscription lately. They all seem to be tacking to the right to increase their profits, with no regard for the damage they’re doing to the country by enabling the fascist GOP and their thugs.

Once again, the NYT figuring Calculus into their content. After all, they do want to survive as an entity in post-Fascist takeover of America. Both-sides is a sure way to at least give the Board an Out during the “anti-American” kangaroo trials to come.

It was a neat toy, that first Macintosh with its pitiful 128k RAM.

Then came the LaserWriter, Aldus Pagemaker and shortly after that the Macintosh Plus which finally had enough RAM to begin to be useful.

That finally shook things up for real and Jobs was able to take advantage of it.

The Amiga and the Atari ST both came out then too and both were superior in many ways except neither Commodore nor Atari had anyone like Jobs.

At this point, I’m not even sure it’s about profits anymore. The editors and management seem to be true believers far as treating conservative voters as literally all that matters. I’m not even sure how this increases their profits, considering the conservative reader base they’d keep chasing under that idea never gives them the time of day because nothing they could do would shake the ‘liberal media’ label. Considering Baquet and co.’s public statements on the whole thing, they literally believe that they’re too liberal and must give conservative voices even more coverage to exclusion, because they’re the voices that matter, and they’ve been ‘too hard’ on them.

Yikes, that’s a high property tax rate.

Right wing talking heads always claiming California has high taxes, but our property taxes are quite low thanks to Prop 13.

And that is a problem, because it means revenue has to be raised in other ways. So the state income tax is relatively high for the upper tax bracket.

Sales tax is also high because, again, the local communities don’t get enough from the 1% (+ misc) from the property tax.

Commodore was poorly run and ended up being a front for who knows what untoward international intrigue, being a Bahamian corporation with former US official on the board.

Atari as a company never really recovered from the collapse of their gaming business.

But you’re right - both of the companies 68000-based computers had a great deal going for them, expecially the Amiga.

However, success in business is about longevity and strategy, and Steve Jobs knew how to do that.

I loved the early Macs, and had both Macs and PCs at work but prefered the Macs. At the time of the Mac II a great deal of innovative software came along to take advantage of the greatly upgraded capabilities. I still can’t find software today that does for me what I had back then.

The Amiga was a multi-processor computer. The graphics chip were very advanced for the time and could be programmed.

The graphics output chip could be programmed to change the clock rate on output. That meant that for a single scan line one could change the clock, i.e., change the horizontal resolution.

That was unheard of in low-cost graphics at the time.

More data -

The local area contains the Belorussian Western Command. A quick google shows the 6th Mech Bde, 557th Engineer Bde, 74th Signal Rgt and 250th “Protection and Maintenance” Btn (sounds like the garrison)

The Koniuchi/Labna complex appears to contain the 1st Air Defense Rgt. Which seems reasonable since there are a lot of vehicles in permanent revetments and a number of underground ammunition storage bunkers.

The plane is flying from Poland to Latvia around the Russian enclave of Kaliningrad.

en.wikipedia.org

If the Russians are planning on trying something in the Baltic it will likely originate there. More likely they may try to pretend to do something to distract Polish and Latvian NATO forces while the Russians invade Ukraine on the other side of Belorussia/Belarus.

The forces in western Belarus are generally considered too small to militarily cover the area and protect access to the Russian Kaliningrad enclave. Further, the Belarus units there are generally at 50% strength and would require mobilization and augmentation to even reach their full strength. Finally, I had heard that Russia had reinforced their Kaliningrad garrison.

I suspect that the plane was checking out these things as well as the ships that had recently sailed past Sweden’s Gotland Island to there.

Commodore and Atari basically killed each other, largely through fighting over IBM and Apple’s table scraps. Commodore was almost hilariously mismanaged, meandering down all sorts of tech blind allies and treating their retailers like shit to the point that many just stopped dealing with them altogether. And Atari was already shaky before the Crash of ‘83, as the sale to Warner and the subsequent change from innovation to flooding the market was killing sales. One of my favorite bits of trivia about Atari is that they blew up opportunities to sell not only the NES but the Sega Genesis under license in the US because their CEOs were greedy, incompetent hotheads.

Ironically, what killed them almost did Apple in when they pushed Jobs because they felt he was endangering the company’s profitability by pursuing experimental tech rather than just churning out slightly better versions of their existing computer lines every other year.

I guess the booster finally caught up with me. Had chills for a few hours Saturday night, and then just a very low grade headache for most of Sunday, but was surprised I wasn’t really at all fatigued. Decided last night I couldn’t even watch the second half of bills/chiefs because I just wanted to go to bed, so then woke up once about 4:30, and then again about 15 minutes ago, so nearly 12 hours of sleep, which I haven’t done since I was a teenager.

The Guardian: Sarah Palin takes on New York Times in defamation trial
Lawsuit claims 2017 editorial falsely linked her to a mass shooting in Tucson, Arizona, in which Gabby Giffords was severely injured

A defamation trial pitting Sarah Palin against the New York Times will open on Monday over a 2017 editorial which the former Alaska governor and Republican vice-presidential pick says falsely linked her to a mass shooting in Tucson, Arizona.

The editorial was published after a shooting in Alexandria, Virginia, in which Steve Scalise, a member of House Republican leadership, was wounded.

The Times said the Tucson shooting, in which six people were killed and a Democratic congresswoman, Gabby Giffords, was severely injured, came after Palin’s political action committee circulated a map putting 20 Democrats including Giffords under “stylised cross hairs”, and that “the link to political incitement was clear”.

Palin objected to language that James Bennet, The Times’s former editorial page editor, added to a draft prepared by a colleague. She contends that the added material fitted Bennet’s “preconceived narrative” and as an “experienced editor” he knew and understood the meaning of his words. She is seeking unspecified damages, but according to court papers has estimated $421,000 in damage to her reputation.

The Times corrected the editorial to remove any connection between political rhetoric and the Arizona shooting. Bennet has said he did not intend to blame Palin.

This weekend, a Times spokesperson told CNN: “We published an editorial about an important topic that contained an inaccuracy. We set the record straight with a correction. We are deeply committed to fairness and accuracy in our journalism, and when we fall short, we correct our errors publicly, as we did in this case.”

Many contend that Palin deserves criticism for employing dangerous rhetoric - if not in direct relation to the Tucson shooting.

On Sunday, the gun control campaigner Shannon Watts said: “In 2010, Sarah Palin created a target list with crosshairs of a gun sight over Congress members’ districts. While that campaign may not have been directly related to the Tucson shooting, she helped create today’s culture of political threats and violence.”

But on the right, many hope Palin’s case against The Times will lead to a revision of the high standard for proving libel of US public figures - an aim cherished by Donald Trump among others.

Freedom of the press is enshrined in the first amendment to the US constitution, ratified in 1791. The supreme court adopted the “actual malice” standard, which makes it difficult for public figures to win libel lawsuits, in 1964, in the landmark New York Times v Sullivan decision.

Two justices on the current, conservative-dominated supreme court, Clarence Thomas and Neil Gorsuch, have suggested revisiting that standard and Palin has signaled that she will challenge the Sullivan precedent on appeal if she loses at trial.

I don’t want them dying either. They’re taking up resources that are causing people who’ve done everything right (like vaccinating, taking care of themselves, masking, social distancing, etc.) but having a car wreck or a fall or having a completely unrelated health crisis and finding that their hospital doesn’t have staff or resources because they’re overrun with covid cases.

That’s the problem - it’s not just the covid deaths and patients in hospitals. It’s the add-on effect causing reduced care for everyone else needing regular health care services. The GOP are breaking health care for everyone, all in the hope of breaking Biden’s administration.

British scientist visiting Atlanta suburb killed by stray bullet while lying in bed

A British astrophysicist visiting his girlfriend just outside Atlanta was killed by a stray bullet on Jan. 16 that struck him while he was lying in bed. Matthew Willson, 31, died of a single gunshot wound to the head after being transported to a hospital, local law enforcement said Thursday.

Willson, who was from Chertsey, a London suburb, was next to his girlfriend when he was shot in Brookhaven, Ga., around 2 a.m. The couple heard a heavy round of gunshots when she suggested calling the police, she told British media, which reported they had met when he worked as a researcher at Georgia State University.

“His last words were, ‘Sure, I’m sure they are just messing around,’ ” said his partner, Katherine Shepard, who saw him slumping over in the dark, only to realize he had been hit. She recalled trying to stop the bleeding from his head with a towel, urging him to “stay with me” as his eyes closed and he struggled to breathe.

The Briton’s killing made headlines in Britain, which has one of the lowest gun homicide rates in the world and some of the strictest firearms laws, including comprehensive background checks.

I had a friend that did animation on his Amiga. He loved it for that.

Democrats have reacted angrily to the news that Virginia’s new Republican Attorney General Jason Miyares has fired the top lawyer for the University of Virginia while he was on leave to work on the House Select Committee investigating the January 6 attack.

Victoria LaCivita, spokeswoman for the newly appointed Jason Miyares, said the decision to fire Democrat Tim Heaphy had “nothing to do” with his work on the January 6 committee looking into the insurrection.

…..
While attorney generals do oversee lawyers at a range of institutions such as colleges and universities in their states, they are rarely replaced when a new attorney general is brought in. Surovell said he cannot think of another example where an AG has immediately removed a top lawyer from a school, and therefor it must be a political move.

Wow.

What sort of idiot drives a plow that fast to be able to throw that much slush and debris that far so as to make it across a fairly broad interstate median and into on-coming traffic?

When I usually see plows in NY or PA doing the left lanes they are driving much slower and only tossing the snow just off the road. And they also generally have vehicles following them with indicators that there are slow vehicles/plows ahead.

If it’s 3rd party “capitalistic” BS then Ohio needs to revisit this and the appropriate regulations. (HAH)

Florida school district cancels professor’s civil rights lecture over critical race theory concerns

MIAMI — A Florida school district canceled a professor’s civil rights history seminar for teachers, citing in part concerns over “critical race theory” — even though his lecture had nothing to do with the topic.

J. Michael Butler, a history professor at Flagler College in St. Augustine, was scheduled to give a presentation Saturday to Osceola County School District teachers called “The Long Civil Rights Movement,” which postulates that the civil rights movement preceded and post-dated Martin Luther King Jr. by decades.

He said that he was shocked to learn why the seminar had been canceled through an email Wednesday but that he wasn’t surprised because educators feel increasingly intimidated over teaching about race.

Less than 24 hours before Butler was informed of the cancellation, a state Senate committee advanced legislation Tuesday at the behest of Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis to block public schools and private businesses from making people feel “discomfort” when they’re taught about race. DeSantis also wants to empower parents to sue schools that teach critical race theory.

“There’s a climate of fear, an atmosphere created by Gov. Ron DeSantis, that has blurred the lines between scared and opportunistic,” Butler said in a phone interview.

Shocking, the very thing that people were warning about with this anti-CRT bullshit is coming to pass. I can’t wait for the usual suspects to tell us how this is actually ok because it could have really been stealth CRT just waiting to be sprung.

White supremacy wins as always, I suppose.

Soviet truck drivers got paid by the mile, which was measured in the amount of fuel they consumed, so they would often just go dump their fuel, take a day off and drive back to the depot with an empty tank…

I’ve spent years living in upstate NY and snowplows are supposed to take all kinds of precautions around overpasses, center medians, and oncoming traffic. This driver failed to follow any of the precautions - slower speed, changing plow angle to reduce chances overspray into oncoming traffic, etc.

But every year there are incidents where a plow doesn’t follow rules and bad things happen.

Like when street plows throw slush onto unsuspecting pedestrians at high speed enough to break limbs and windows of nearby buildings.

(HAH)

Lithuania was the last nation in Europe to convert to Christianity, and only succumbed following a brutal series of crusades by the Teutonic Knights that lasted from the 12th century to the 15th. Even after the Grand Duke converted, the knights continued their campaign to cull all the remaining pagans (and Orthodox Christians while they were at it) in the region. It’s still considered the longest continuous war in the history of Europe.

The Teutonic Crusades ravaged all the Baltic states and Finland too, and committed total genocide against the Old Prussians, adding insult to extermination when the genocidal knights went and adopted the name of the extinct Prussians as their own nationality. It’s not for nothing that Friedrich von Schrötter called 18th-century Prussia an “army with a country” rather than a “country with an army”.

I watch a lot of “Great Courses” lecture series, and Professor Vejas Gabriel Liulevicius’ _History of Eastern Europe_ was a big eye-opener. I recommend it!

Yep, that rings a bell for anyone who’s worked in a grocery store.

My son is working at a Safeway for his college job (southeast Denver metro, middle class neighborhood). They were down to TEN carts in the whole store a few weeks ago — the metal shopping carts kept disappearing, and they had to borrow some from other stores. One of his managers talked to their usual crew of homeless folks who hang around the parking lot, and tracked down the problem — a nearby pawnshop was offering $10 for each cart someone brought them. The pawnshop would then turn around and sell the carts for at least $50 to metal dealers.

The county mounties went down and talked to the pawnbrokers about this very illegal practice. The cart supply is now holding fairly steady (which helped during the frantic rush of business they got during the King Soopers/Kroger strike). I suppose if there’s a moral to the story, it’s that it pays to not abuse the homeless folks so they are willing to talk to you. Also that our current economic model is horribly honked when you have this many hopeless homeless so desperate for ten bucks that will barely buy a meal. *sigh*

(and that my kid is terribly lucky to work for a store that has nice, stable, competent managers. that’s pretty rare in retail.)

Never make a dudebro President.

El Salvador President Nayib Bukele, says Human Rights Watch, has “undermined basic democratic checks and balances” since taking office.

But he seems to have a sense of humor.

Bukele changed his Twitter profile to that of a McDonald’s employee, in wake of the latest plunge in bitcoin that brought the cryptocurrency down as much as 50% from its highs.

That’s a reference to an internet meme, where HODL’ers indicate their future career prospects when bitcoin slumps. McDonald’s pays as low as $11 per hour.

Bitcoin BTCUSD again started to slide early Monday after a turbulent weekend, falling below $34,000. The cryptocurrency is down over 50% from its record high.

Under Bukele’s direction, El Salvador has been buying bitcoin, and uniquely has adopted it as legal tender. Coindesk reports the country now holds over 1,500 bitcoin, worth some $53 million in fiat Yankee dollars.

A lot of them will be quite happy about it as they think women should be made subservient to their husbands and are extremely willing to force other women into servitude and 2nd class status. Some others think they have the means to be able to wield direct power over other women and exert soft power behind the scenes over men and society at large once our right wing theocracy is fully in power.

The automatic “I am white” sense of Entitlement is the core belief system of about 35% of this country.

That’s a feature, not a bug, to the GOP.

But how would this affect white women? Are the universities going to be permitted to discriminate on the basis of race and gender as long as they don’t adopt affirmative action policies?

I was just thinking that one of the things we all probably need to get better at is recognizing when the color of a white person’s skin is being used to get something they wouldn’t easily get otherwise.

re: #196 Wile E. Wonka

Yes, the Liulevicius “Eastern Europe” Great Course is excellent! (It may be available through one’s public library too.)

Hard to “recognize” when this has been a basic operating system in this country since…oh… 1619?

Read a study once that of Legacy/child of donor or faculty member students that were white, studied at a number of top level- Universities, only about 25% of them would have been accepted if they had applied as just another student who was white.

I’ve come a long way in life but the initial transition from semi-white (white trash) to fully white was a simple matter of staying out of trouble, practicing punctuality and improving my diction. ANY poc would have faced an epic struggle to reach the same level of the playing field.
