The Board consists of six members appointed by the President, three appointed by the Vice President, four appointed by the Speaker of the House of Representatives, one designated by the Senate Armed Services Committee and one designated by the House Armed Services Committee. The President of the United States receives an annual written report of the Board’s findings and recommendations.

ETA: I’m guessing they have strong opinions about Critical Race Theory.

Lee was a tactical genius and above average strategically, but just like the Japanese in the Pacific in the 1940’s, he was working against an inexorable clock. The Union had the blockade, the industrial might of the foundries of the North, and the manpower. It was only a matter of finding the right man to start grinding away the finely trained and highly spirited soldiers that comprised the core of the Rebel Army, and the raw recruits being dragged in with sub-standard weaponry would be easy pickings.

Disagree: the British disaster which concluded the First Anglo-Afghan War was quite well-known among the 19th-Century military world (if only as a memorable debacle-for-the-ages). Old Bobby -if brought back in 2002 - would probably be astonished at how little the fundamental strategic factors in Afghanistan had changed.

Though I imagine Lee would appreciate the upgrades in weaponry: Kalashnikovs and Stinger missiles get the job done a lot better than Enfield rifles and jezails…….

To be truthful, if you can explain the concepts of modern weaponry to any historical general, they would invent novel strategies to make use of those capabilities. Those would last about as long as any novel strategy invented by any general in the history of ever, that is to say, not very fucking long. Humans are adaptable; that’s what we do, biologically, as a species. A general came up with a new strategic use for cargo planes? Fine, open season with surface-to-air missiles. Etc.

It is so infuriating to hear praise of a man who was a traitor to this nation and who fought for an evil cause. For years it was common practice in an effort to unite the nation to treat the Confederacy with kid gloves — that we are all Americans. The assassination of Lincoln and then 90 years of Jim Crow and segregation should have demonstrated that this was a fatally flawed approach. There should be no honor accorded to those who led the fight against the United States and no honor or respect accorded to those living today who express any admiration of these enemies of our nation.

Rule 1 of Great Generalship — never start a fight you know you’re going to lose. Lee fails that basic test right out of the gate.

Rule 2 of Great Generalship — when you know you’ve lost, stop fighting. Lee fought through the winter of 1864-65 killing thousands of his own soldiers from cold, disease and hunger rather than admit the Confederacy had lost. He never went cold or hungry himself during that winter, of course.

Once Lee faced competent if uninspired leadership from the Union forces (Grant, Sherman et al) with a reliable political backstop in Lincoln he was totally outclassed. He wasn’t helped by the sack of rabid badgers that passed for a government in the Confederacy. He should have surrendered in late 1863 once he saw how things were going but, well, he was Robert E. Lee.

He had a totally spiffing beard though.

Winning at Gettysburg would’ve been bad for the Union, but not fatal. Vicksburg cut them off from the Great River, and put the final nail in the coffin of the blockade that was strangling the Confederacy. Army prowess means nothing if the Union Navy controls the ports, and blockade runners can’t ship enough supplies to sustain a war long-term. Ask the Japanese about that.

The Great Generals are accountants at their core. Vicksburg cut them off from the Great River, and put the final nail in the coffin of the blockade that was strangling the Confederacy. Army prowess means nothing if the Union Navy controls the ports, and blockade runners can’t ship enough supplies to sustain a war long-term. Ask the Japanese about that.

“Victory” for Lee at Gettysburg would have been as pointless as most of his other victories. Each one cost him thousands of soldiers he couldn’t afford to lose, while the Union had a near limitless supply of manpower. The end would’ve been the same.

Day before yesterday, a woman from this apartment building was taken by ambulance to the hospital. She was conscious and speaking with the EMTs. She has always breathed really hard, every time I see her, except the day before yesterday. She lives alone, but had a woman helping her yesterday, as she often does.

Seeing the flashing lights and the EMTs increased my anxiety, but seeing things take place in a very matter-of-fact way, and the apparent availability of help at the hospital, was reassuring.

This is how knowledge is gained. Someone makes an observation. Other’s want to know the causes. More people study the phenomenon, etc.

I really don’t get why people think these sort of things in science are unusual. Gaining knowledge starts with curiosity and speculation.

I get the schadenfreude that some want, with the macho-Trumpers now chemically subverting what said machismo-worshippers might think of as their powerful masculinity.

In this case, time will tell. With so many Americans guzzling horse dewormer, in time we might see a large study on the effects.

I would say we may see the effects begin to really roll in come Christmas (9 months from March this year, when Ivermectin went viral (pun not intended)), peaking in June something, then slowly tapering off during the following 9-12 months.

This is what the Swedish medical info system (LIF/FASS) has to say about Ivermectin tablets:
“Djurstudier har visat reproduktionstoxikologiska effekter. Ivermektin ska endast användas under graviditet då det är strikt indicerat.”, which Swedish for
“Animal studies have shown reproductive toxicological effects. Ivermectin should be used during pregnancy only when strictly indicated.” Which I believe is medicalese for “use only when you have to, or as a medication of last resort.”
They even discourage pregnant women or women who want to become pregnant from using the topical cream.
So TL;DR is reproductive toxicity, alas not permanent effects that I can find.

Which means the study in question actually builds on this past work. It may be spurious, it may be valid, but it’s not that surprising of a result.

Clueless fuckery is part of our species. Wherever you look you will find people doing stupid things. It’s a wonder we made it down from the trees without falling on our faces.

One of the HGTV shows is called “Help I Wrecked My House”. It’s about a contractor who goes around helping house owners who start remodeling projects that go horribly wrong.

And the reason these projects go horribly wrong is because the house owners are clueless about project managing construction, and usually have no construction/installation experience.

Now that people don’t have this expertise is hardly surprising. But what is really astounding is that people believe that expertise and experience are not needed.

This disregard of expertise is what we find so much in the Trumper mentality. The phenomenon is not limited to the Trumpers, but they are particularly proud of their disregard of expertise.

The Union Army of the Potomac, after two years of combat experience, was finally reaching a level of professional capability and resilience that the Confederate forces had achieved a year earlier.

In Pickett’s Charge, Lee was betting that the Union Army had either run out of reserves or would be unable to redeploy them to the threatened sector in time. He was almost right. By the way, he committed almost every effective unit he had remaining in his Army into that attack.

While there are differing opinions on the status of the Union and Confederate Armies on July 3rd. I have to agree with your point that what actually happened was that the Union Army had sufficient forces to decisively defeat the July 3rd attack.

And I agree that even had the Confederates actually somehow driven the Union Army off of Cemetery Ridge, the were unlikely to have been able to follow up. They had less than 1/3rd of their Army combat effective; tens of thousands of wounded; and as you point out, were just about out of supplies. Plus they were in the middle of a lot of major Union cities with a lot of troops and militia. (Harrisburg, Philadelphia, Baltimore, Washington DC.)

I suspect that you have read about the Lee’s retreat after Gettysburg where he had to abandon thousands of his wounded as well as stragglers and supply train wagons, in order to make it to the Potomac before the Union Army could. Even so, the Confederates barely made it across the Potomac. (Which was flooding at the time, precluding immediate Union followup.)
