Is it weird to be proud of an article’s comments section?
or is it the sign of our times? Sorry, if you didn’t know, i have this huge thing against the comments section of basically any online article; especially political articles. Comment sections tend to be this disgusting cesspool of stupid, uninformed people. Some of these are what are referred to as “trolls”; people who just say shit to start shit. The trolls that comment on political articles are particularly awful. if you’re unfamiliar with comment trolls, here’s an example:
why is Clyburn called an African -American when Hoyer isn’t called a Finnish -American and Hoyer’s father is direct from the homeland. So much for the liberal “anti-discrimination” policy.Divisiveness is encouraged every time people are segregated by ethnicisity
Anyways, so i stumbled across an article about how today’s Garfield strip was referencing Veteran’s Day as “National Stupid Day”. Naturally, that could be very offensive.. but Jim Davis (the creator of Garfield. come on, who doesn’t know this?) issued a statement apologizing for the timing:
Regarding today’s Garfield comic strip , it was written almost a year ago and I had no idea when writing it that it would appear today — of all days. I do not use a calendar that lists holidays and other notable days so when this strip was put in the queue, I had no idea it would run on Veterans Day. What are the odds?
going on to say…
My brother Dave served in Vietnam. My son James is a Marine who has had two tours of duty, both in Iraq and Afghanistan. You’d have to go a long way to find someone who was more proud and grateful for what our Veterans have done for all of us.
In a sane, logical person’s mind, problem resolved. In fact, Jim Davis’s statement is admirable because not only did Jim Davis apologize for something that was seemingly out of his control, he has firsthand experience with Veterans. His own damn son served two duties in Afghanistan and Iraq!
Of course, comment trolls are not sane or logical, and i wasn’t surprised to see this comment from user “amishfarmer” among the first (1st rule of comment trolling: strike early):
This guy is a typical whining, limp-wristed liberal who insists on insulting the military and all other things which are good for America. I say ship him out to Saudi Arabia and have him do a comic strip insulting Muslims and watch their reaction.
There is no point in arguing with a comment troll. Especially if the site is overrun by comment trolls. But in this instance, there were a lot of positive comments about Jim Davis’s statement, and seemingly from a lot of veterans too! ex:
I’m a combat vet and I dont see anything wrong with it. Some people just search for things to get upset about. Thanks Mr. Davis for all the years of laughter. Keep it up, Hooah!
As one vet to another, I completely agree…take it down a notch folks, Davis wasn’t talking about us (and it’s pretty funny Garfield strip) Happy Veteran’s Day guys (and gals)!
I’m a non-combat vet and I agree with Mr. McComb. I read the Garfield strip this morning in my daily paper and never once did I think Jim Davis was mocking vets. Let’s all try to be a little kinder of one another.
As a veteran of the Viet Nam war let me just say; Lighten up people. This strip did not offend me in anyway form or fashion. Let’s all try to have a little sense of humor. There are obviously more important things in the world going on…Retired Marine Corps MSgt.
and more condeming amishfarmer:
You are way over the top with your criticism. It was an accident of timing, nothing to do with an insult to our soldiers. Look at his family history.
Semper Fi
Wife of a VetBase: Pleiku, South Vietnam. Tour: 19Sep1969-25Apr71. No offense Jim…in fact very funny. However, amishfarmer, you are the most obnoxious, destructive force known to the free world. PS…I didn’t want to be there, but while there I saw all of my missions to the very end…what have you done lately you maggot?
You don’t mention if you are a veteran, I’m assuming you are not. I am a vet and it doesn’t bother me, we seem to have a sense of humor that hardcore conservatives do not.
I am a veteran as most on this page are. You, Amishfarmer (which I think you are not) are the insulting one. What did YOU do for your country besides point your finger at others. You want to have an opinion on this???? Pick up a weapon and defend your country.
Wishing all veterans and serving military the best on this day.
Thank You!!!
