Editorial Reviews
Import-only reissue of this career retrospective, originally released on LP and cassette in the U.S in 1978. The duo of Donald Fagen and Walter Becker created some of the classiest, most sophisticated pop music of the 70's. Their compositions are so musically complex and fascinating that the Julliard actually offers a class devoted to their music. Features all 18 tracks from the original release, including 'Do It Again', 'Reeling in the Years', 'Bodhisattva', 'Rikki Don't Lose That Number', 'Any Major Dude (Will Tell Ya)','Here at the Western World' (originally issued only as a B-side), 'Doctor Wu', 'Black Friday', 'Peg' and 'Josie'. Universal.

Why this should happen I simply have no idea. Maybe it's an age thing.
I hope it's not a sign that I can't take the noise anymore. That would be most worrying.
So having decided that there was indeed a place for the Dan-meisters, then came the decision on which of their many compilations I should buy. Between 1972-80, Messrs. Becker and Fagin made seven albums before their original split in 1981. By my reckoning there have since been a staggering ten compilations of their work, including the obligatory CD box set, and another so-called definitive collection is due to appear at the end of June!
It would of been easy to walk into a record shop and buy a CD collection but being a vinyl junkie I decided that the only way was to go for the first vinyl collection; "Greatest Hits 1972-78".
So what did I get for my six pounds from Amazon market place? Eighteen tracks spread across four sides in a gatefold sleeve with printed inner sleeves.
The album inner spread features a monochrome photo of Becker and Fagin, whilst the left hand side features all track details, with timings and a lengthy list of credits from Patti Austin to Snooky Young.
The inner sleeves feature just detail from the main photo. Rather a wasted opportunity methinks. They could of had a photo montage or lyrics or whatever.
True to it's title, the album does feature all the bands hit singles, many in full-length album versions; "Do It Again" (a US no.6) clocks in at almost six minutes long for instance.
Incidentally it is very interesting to note that despite their British popularity, the Dan only scored one major UK hit with "Haitian Divorce" in 1976.
All together this collection (which is also on CD) is excellent. Here are all the best known Steely Dan songs with the exception of "FM (No Static At All)". Anyone like myself looking for a one-stop collection would be hard pushed to find a better album.
Seriously, this collection, has the main tracks, in the right order. Its a great introduction for anyone who wants to hear more than just "Reelin in the Years". I have a couple of other SD compilations and the 4 CD boxed set, but if you only had one Dan album, this would be the one to get.
I've seen Donald Fagen twice now and he still rocks that jazzy sound.
Well worth having in your vinyl library.
